Birth day of Shaheed-e-Aazam Sardar Bhagat singh Celebrated at Lovely Professional University

The Divisions of Student and Cultural Affairs of Lovely Professional University celebrated the birth-day of Shaheed-e-Aazam Sardar Bhagat Singh with great enthusiasm and excitement. Different programmes in relation to the depiction of this great Indian Martyr’s life were presented at Shri Baldev Raj Mittal Auditorium of the University. Poem recitation, Solo/ Group Song, Choreography, Short Play, Dance and poster competition well exhibited and reminded the young professionals about marvellous rebellious movements made to structure Independent India. Specially present, the Vice-Chairman of Youth Development Board, Punjab Government, Mr Tarun Chugh inspired the students greatly.

The legendary young freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh, who fought for India’s freedom till his last breath was born on September 28, 1907. The Proud Punjab saluted and remembered this great personality month long on his 102nd birthday, through patriotic celebrations.The students of LPU presented highly applaudable programme keeping sacrifice of Sardar Bhagat Singh alive and recreated his legacy in their own colourful way. The whole auditorium kept echoing through continuous slogans of patriotic fervour- “Vande Matram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”. The Director General, Er H R Singla, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Vijay Gupta, Senior Deans and Deans of the University, also graced the occasion by their benign presence.

Saluting the Shaheed and taking illustrative examples from his life, Mr Chugh inspired the students: “Indian Professionals are known world around. With in next ten years, India is going to establish itself as Super Power. The students of today are greatly needed to read, understand and practise the revolutionary thoughts of this great martyr who always dreamt to see India on the top pinnacle as “VISHV GURU” in all fields.” He further motivated the students by invoking them to be prepared to lead the world: “Bhagat Singh was also a brilliant student. However he had foreseen the potentialities if his motherland. The modern students should shun vices and voice strongly against corruption, starvation, illiteracy, tyranny and other social evils. They should step forward with big aim to chase, and big role to play in creating Leader India.”

Some of the students, Heena Shrivastav, Shamsher, Mantej, Narinder Kaur and Manpreet Kaur said, “The progamme has enchanted us to the core. We pledge to work towards strengthening our mental power to make our motherland ahead of all, not only as resourceful but powerful also.”

Students of Hotel Management of Lovely Professional University Exhibited Perfect Technical Skills

In order to make students ever-ready for the viable careers in Hotel Industry, the School of Hospitality of Lovely Professional University, organized a Chef Competition through its Department of Hotel Management. It was in regard to International Chefs’ Day. The main objective of establishing this day is to create widespread awareness about the profession in Hotel Industry and for the profession to give back to society through charitable events, culinary competitions and demonstrations. It was also to make students more practical by incorporating latest trends and techniques available than merely getting bookish knowledge.

The competition was divided into two Chef Categories -Senior and Junior. 15 students participated in this competition. This competition was sponsored by Ricela Health Foods Limited. Students used their technical skills to prepare three course menus. Mandeep Singh of BHMCT and Rahul from BSc Hotel management 1st year were declared as winners in Senior and Junior categories respectively. Whereas, Sania from MSc Nutrition & Dietetics and Jaspreet Singh from BHMCT 2nd year were declared runners up.

After inauguration by the senior Dean of the Department, the event began with a small presentation. The Executive Dean of the University, Ms. Rashmi Mittal, made her graceful presence as a Chief Judge to motivate students. Dr Sanjeev Sharma from Ricella and Prof. Subhasini Verma also accompanied in the Panel for Judgment. Appreciating the students’ endeavors, hard work and performance, Ms Mittal said, “In this era, the hospitality industry is vast and very diverse as maximum of daily activities of People are continuously patronizing establishments in this industry. The management of such establishments is very challenging, as managers need to be flexible enough to anticipate and meet a wide variety of needs. And, by creating awareness at this level is a huge and first step towards getting more qualified employees in this field. We need to let the students know that there are jobs in the hotel industry that have a great future for them.”

On this occasion the students of the Department said that they have learnt a lot from this organization. Prizes to the winners were distributed by the Executive Dean Madam. Director General Er. H.R. Singla also gave his valuable presence to motivate students. Closing of the event came out with a small video presentation by Chef Varinder Singh Rana and Chef Karan Berry.

Rocking Performances Concluded the Youth festival at Lovely Professional University

Folk as well as Western Dances stole the show on last day of the annual youth festival of Lovely Professional University. Rocking performances by multi-talented students of the University compelled all the viewers and audience to sing dance and feel greatly along with them. The enthusiastic audience responded with gusto and applauding. The second and final day witnessed Geet, Gazals, Giddha, Bhangra, Folk and Western Dances, and various other Show stealing performances of 25 Indian States and 16 countries. This day's events also included competitions in light vocal, Solo, Mimicry, Mime, Debate, on the Spot Painting, Clay Modelling, Rangoli etc.

Other stalls at different blocks of the university had competitions in poster making, Tattoos Ikebana, Dance, Robotic , LAN Games, Sports, Quiz Show, Band Performances, Fashion Parade, Mehndi, Face Painting etc. Jalebi Junction, Mitran Da Dhaba and other food stalls of tongue tasting stuffs attracted the gluttonous very much. Prior to this, on the first day the inaugural day has already seen the classical, cultural & rainbow display of art. Seven Popular Bands of the University also continued performing through out on both the days and made more than 20,000 students dance to their melodies. Students, teachers and other members of the staff enjoyed fun and frolic got through the different Festive organizations.

The chief guest of the day was Mr Ashok Mittal, the Chancellor of the University. Congratulating On the brilliant organization of the youth festival of mammoth dimensions, he said: “ Such organizations keep all of us full of youth, vitality and vigour not only in deeds and actions but in thoughts and plannings also. Moreover, these give us an opportunity to work together under a great feeling of oneness, equality and determination with proper understanding towards culture, customs, traditions of not only ours but that of all other paricipants hailing from different states and countries.”

All the competitions were beautifully judged by Mr Ajit Rai(Theatre & Journalism), Mr HG Roy(Kathak Kala Kendra) & Mr Padam Chand( National Bal Bhawan)- specially invited judges of versatility and immense reputation from New Delhi. In the evening, Mr. Mittal distributed the prizes to the winners of different competitions. He was accompanied by Ms Rashmi Mittal, the Executive Dean of the University.The LIECA School was declared over all Champion.

‘Microsoft Community Tech Days’organized at Lovely Professional University

Giant and worldwide leader in software, Microsoft was in Lovely Professional University to host its internationally registered event ‘Microsoft Community Tech Days’. Such ‘Tech Days’ are to provide IT oriented students a rare opportunity to dive deep into the latest Microsoft Products and Technologies. It was powered by ‘Kryptorhythm’- a Micro soft Student Club and Microsoft Student Partners, New Delhi. Renowned Microsoft Valuable Professionals (MVPS), Mr Mukeet Khan and Mr Jayant Jindal, were specially present on the occasion. They had various sessions on new Microsoft Technologies and Technology opportunities on two consecutive days, for the benefit of the students. About 1050 students participated in the event.

Mr Khan presented Introduction to Operating System and Web-Server. Whereas, Mr Jindal explained in details about Dot Net Framework and System Architecture. Also one of the five Microsoft Student Partners (MSPs), from Delhi, Mr. Rajeev Bhatia, who is an established MSP, told about Microsoft Initiatives for students. He informed about Photosynth, Robotics and Cloud Computing. In fact, through many programmes, partnerships; Microsoft provides training, tools and support to numerous projects, organizations and people by creating social and economic opportunities in transforming communities around the world.

On this occasion, the Chancellor of LPU, Mr Ashok Mittal said: “By bringing the giant company like Microsoft at the campus, it is an effort of the University to get our students exposed to the latest trends and techniques prevalent globally. Such initiatives are definitely going to benefit the students to become efficiency super-doers by attending interactive technical presentations and product demonstration sessions made through technology experts.”

It was also the moment of pride for the University as it launched a new Microsoft Student Tech Club- ‘ne Creator’ at its School of Science & Technology, in the presence of Microsoft Representatives. Two of its students have also got selected as MSPs(Microsoft Student Partners) during the event. Under a long and hard selection Criteria and clearing three rounds of Selection Process, Group Discussion; Abhishek Sekhri and Apoorv Upadhyay, are now new MSPs. All the participating students are also very happy by getting attached to a great name through their newly inaugurated Microsoft oriented club. They would soon be getting Microsoft Access Keys, Certificates and original Software of Microsoft to be regular proud part of the Company.

WIPRO BPO Made Placement Drive at Lovely Professional University

WIPRO BPO made a Placement Drive at Lovely Professional University by inviting the Graduates of BBA/BCA/B Com students of batch 2011 passing outs. After a process involving PPT, Group 0Interaction, Voice & Accent Round, Technical Test; Six students got selected thereof. The salary package offered is 1.54 Lacs per annum which, above all, has in addition a great chance to be a proud part of the big Industry. About 100 students attended the Drive.

The selection procedure was chalked out at Shri Baldev Raj Mittal Auditorium of the University. The rounds of personal interview were made after initial short-listing. A few of the students who got selected, Mayur Aggarwal, Sandeep Nath, Shikha Kuthiala and Kritika Mahajan said in similar tones: “Attending a placement drive is in itself a great learning process, at least, for a beginner. Oberoi Group Visited Department of Hospitality of Lovely Professional University

The senior representatives of the largest and finest Hospitality chains in the world, the Oberoi Group, visited Lovely Professional University. The objective was to share with the students about the subtle awareness in regard to the Hospitality Industry and talk about career opportunities with the Oberoi Group. They made a pre- recruitment presentation for the aspiring young professionals of the University. About three hundred students of Hospitality & Management Programmes attended it.

Col JS Chauhan, HR Manager, Oberoi Group, who led the representing team, made a fruitful presentation about the recruitment procedures to the Group and also interacted with the students on hospitality as an Industry. Students were well acquainted with the Oberoi Center of Learning and Development (OCLD) Training Programmes which are considered a benchmark for international excellence within the hotel industry. Mr Chauhan elaborated: “There are three courses, Guest Services Management, Housekeeping Management & Kitchen Management. All of these lead to a first posting as an Operations Executive with The Oberoi Group. These provide an opportunity to be trained by the finest professionals in the hotel business.” Mr. Partap Sharma, HR Executive, and Mr. Rajesh Rawat, HR Supervisor, Oberoi Group, accompanied him. They also helped the students for their queries made.

On this occasion, the Director General of the University, Er.HR Singla, said: “The Department of Hospitality of the University is growing every Year. It has already tied up with Thames Valley University, UK (TVU) of international repute in Hospitality Sector. The present visit by the senior officials of the best group in Asia, Oberoi Group, has much to make the students learn. This effort of the University is to develop, upgrade the quality of training and professional skills of the related students.”

Two of the participating students Anureet and Nasir said: “We are very happy to get boosting and necessary information through a great group which is recognised for its leadership and excellence in hospitality and also for its training and development practices. The way they were impressed by the involvement and solid interaction of the students, we are certain that the ‘Group’ under its Campus Placement Drive will imbibe a maximum number of students from among us.”

Punjab Info-tech & Lovely Professional University Organized NASSCOM’s NAC Tech Sensitization Programme

NASSCOM’s NAC Tech Sensitization Programme was organized by Punjab Info-Tech and Lovely Professional University, jointly, at LPU. Serving as a watchdog to the endorsing prospective 32 companies, NASSCOM is determined to give a neutral third party assessment report to showcase about the students’ skill levels and hence help seek placement for them. This organization was to publicize NAC-Tech test with different Technical Colleges and Universities of the state, coming under the aegis of Department of Technical Education. 35 Training & Placement Officers, Deans, Senior Professors, Principals of colleges and Institutes of Technology, across Punjab, and all Teacher Placement Coordinators, Senior Lecturers, HOS, HODs, CODs from all B Tech/MCA Streams of LPU attended this endeavour. About one lakh candidates are expected to take the test in the next one year.

Elaborating the Programme, Ms. Avneet Bajaj, Sr. Manager Education Initiative, NASSCOM, said: “National Assessment of Competency- Technical (NAC/NAC-Tech) is a national-level unique skill assessment programme. It is for engineering students to benchmark entry level skills in the industry. It will evaluate candidates on their communication and analytical abilities as well as technical skills. The test has been developed in consultation with the IT industry experts. It has two parts. The mandatory Part ‘A’ tests verbal ability, analytical reasoning, learning ability, programming and written English skills; whereas, Part ‘B’ is optional and has tests depending on the specialization field of the candidate. As such, it will make easier for companies to screen candidates in accordance to their needs. She further said, “Moreover, it will also be beneficial for the companies in saving many lacs of rupees which these used to regularly spend on the tests and trainings for the new joinees. Now, the certificate issued by NASSCOM will serve as an authentic document in regard to the abilities of the candidates for the perusal of Industry/Departments. ”

On this occasion the Chancellor of the University, Mr Ashok Mittal said: “The channelized dissemination of IT knowledge can go a long way. The Indian IT Knowledge industry is growing tremendously and has given a great boost to the Indian Economy. And, our University is ever-ready to be a prominent part of all those efforts which play key role in establishing India’s leadership position globally. The present NAASCOM and Punjab Info-Tech Programme has enabled us to promote their designs so that Punjab may emerge as a premier state in providing well-versed manpower in the related field.”Other senior Delegates from NASSCOM & Punjab Info-tech prominently present were; Mr. Inder Kumar Sethi, Manager HRD, Punjab Info-Tech; and, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Jassi, Dy. Director, Punjab Technical Education.

One of the participants, Mr. NavDeepak Singh Sandhu, Placement Officer, Punjab Technical University JALANDHAR, said : “ This programme highlighted the need of such tests which are going to help greatly to both the students and the Industry. And, this assessment is aimed to assist educational institutions understand the potential of its students and ascertain the caliber of the students for employment by leading IT companies. This joint effort in this regard has been proved very fruitful.”

Lovely Professional University (LPU) Conducted ‘Peer-to-Peer Training’

Being on the very specific lines of a unique programme of Lovely Professional University, its Department of Computer Applications (LSECA) conducted ‘Peer-to-Peer Training’. The objective was to conduct training/grooming sessions by the students, for their fellow students, by proving themselves as perfect Role-Models. It was on the areas that were deemed important from placement or employability point of view. The Students, as Role Model trainers, had been selected on the basis of a panel interview and demo lectures by their University Faculty. Such students were prepared by their teachers to teach all those basic things to other students which they themselves thought to be learnt necessarily.

For this special conduction, the Executive Dean of the University, Ms. Rashmi Mittal said: “One can gain and learn much through one’s self endeavours and experiences. Being open to a situation, the things needed to tackle it are self created automatically, as per one’s abilities and understanding. We all know very well that necessity is the mother of all inventions. As such, being open to the training sessions, the students will be able to improve upon under mutual interaction and beneficial discussions, thereof.”

It was a placement-oriented initiative of the Department for 2011 passing out batch students. As trainer, students got an opportunity to reveal their talent as well the others learnt more and more of basics needed through interactions and presentations from the students of their own level. Training areas were C, C++, Java, Data Structures, DBMS, Computer Networks, Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal and Non-Verbal ‘Reasoning’ or, on the spur, some other topic deemed beneficial for students. These were conducted three times a week and each session was of two hours. The faculty coordinator for the event and the Co-ordinator of the Department of Computer Applications carefully watched for the smoothness of the whole process going on.

Two of the students, Sukhbir Kaur and Malika Bedi, who learnt a lot through active participation in this conduction, said: “Under the able guidance of the teachers, our fellow students taught us very well the basic fundamentals needed for the hard topics. They proved themselves as ‘True Role Models’ by possessing the qualities that we liked them to have as trainers. Being almost on the same level of understanding, they taught us in a common language of easy understanding.”

Indian Army Conducted Placement Drive at Lovely Professional University

The Indian Army organized Campus Interview at Lovely Professional University under University Entry Scheme. As per the information made by the Division of Students Career services of the University, students of various Engineering Disciplines ( B Tech) participated in the drive. Placement Officers interviewed the students and have invited the 24 shortlisted students to participate in SSB. After being selected by the SSB, these students would be enlisted in the Army as commissioned Officers.

A four-member team of officials of the Indian Army had arrived at the campus to begin the four-day procedure for placement drive. Students of B.Tech (All streams) of 2011 & 2012, Final Year & Pre Final Year, Batch had appeared. The package offered for the posts is as per the pay scale by Government of India. The date of joining is June 2011 for students passing out in 2011. After a thorough process followed they shortlisted 24 students for SSB. Out of these students 12 are girls.

On this Drive, Mr. HR Singla, the Director General of the University, said: “After having a number of successful recruitment drives at the campus for more than 5000 students suitably placed hitherto, this recruitment drive for the army is a special one, obviously, it is going to provide better avenues for the youth, as Indian Army is one of the leading Armies of the World.”

On being included in the list of short-listed candidates, Kanchan Verma, Harpreet Kaur, Vishal Sharma, Abhishek Sekri said jointly, “We really feel honoured that the Indian Army has short-listed us for further SSB Procedure. We will try our levels’ best to bring laurels to our alma-mater after being coveted crowned with cane to serve the nation, being one of integral and honoured part of the great army of the world.”

Lovely Professional University Organized Para-Medical Diagnostic Camp

The School of Applied Medical Sciences (LSAMS) of Lovely Professional University organized Para-Medical Diagnostic Camp in the campus. According to Ms. Rashmi Mittal, the Executive Dean of the University, “Important Medical Tests like HB, TC, DC, Blood Grouping, Blood Sugar, Urine Complete, Lipid Profile etc were planned so as to make the students and members of the Staff of the University always on the alert in regard to their health.” She further said: “In this Camp the tests were done at very nominal rates almost amounting to less than half the prevalent Market Rates. Hundreds of students and members of staff utilized the service provided at the Camp. It was organized through the Department of Paramedical Sciences in front of Old Pharmacy Block of the University.”

The camp was also conducted by the University as a part of its social responsibility activities. A team of more than 12 Para-Medical staff members rendered their services. For all those who attended the medical camp, the prescribed medicines were also given at very subsidized rates. About 280 persons attended the camp. Ms. Mittal also added: “It is a well known fact that only strong body keeps a strong mind. So, LPU’s such initiatives and activities mainly focus on the students and Employees health. As such the Department runs regular health oriented camps to provide medical care and medicines at very subsidized rates. In addition to this, such Medical Camps are also arranged in the nearby villages and areas, free or at very nominal rates, for the benefit of the people who cannot afford. These are also to make the people more health conscious and relieve them of their ailments.”

Representatives of DCT University Center Switzerland Visited Lovely Professional University to Explore Possible Academic Collaborations

The President, Mr. Walter Spaltentein, of World Renowned DCT University Center of Switzerland, in the area of Hospitality Management Programmes, visited Lovely Professional University. He had come to explore various areas of co-operation between both the Universities. He had meeting with higher authorities of the University to understand the Indian Hospitality Industry as well to explore synergy between both the two institutions. DCT already has partnered with many top Universities from around the World and has many specialized programmes in Hotel Management and food preparations.

Mr. Walter also interacted with Final year University students of Hotel and Hospitality Management related programmes, where he shared his experiences with them. He also discussed about lucrative opportunities available in Switzerland for the students of Hotel Management and Hospitality stream. Asking about his experience here, Mr. Walter said: “In this era of globalization, the persons with hospitality skills are direly needed to greet other people under culture exchange visits whether in regards to business, tours or other purposes. In this regard our University is on regular hunt for the class collaborative Programmes with other Universities of the world. In India, LPU being the largest University of the country, we are really interested.”

On this Visit, the Chancellor of the University, Mr. Ashok Mittal said: “Our University is regularly pursuing to offer innovative and internationally recognized programmes and trainings to students enabling them to face challenges in their academic or professional lives in an increasingly global market. We are committed to develop programmes and qualifications, thereof, which are relevant to both the students and the industry. The Hospitality Department of the University already has tie-up with Thames Valley University, UK and this tie up will further add to the existing streams of this Department in globalization.”
